Insights Experience

Bringing a storytelling background to data and analytics

Four Little Engines' founder, Shelley Johnson, began her career as an all-round marketer, creating content and delivering campaigns promoting Newcastle and Gateshead in North East England.


More recently, Shelley chose to specialise in market insights and as head of market insights at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, led the company's research consultancy activities and the research programme for Destination North East England (England's first Destination Development Partnership).


Working alongside a talented team of market research professionals, she oversaw and delivered insights and evaluation projects for a wide variety of visitor economy and destination organisations, including:


  • Visitor attractions e.g. English Heritage's Berwick-Upon-Tweed Barracks and Life Science Centre.
  • Culture and heritage organisations e.g. North East Museums and Wild in Art.
  • DMOs, LVEPs and BIDs e.g. Leeds BID and Visit Leeds.
  • Local authorities e.g. Leeds City Council and Sunderland City Council.


Four Little Engines' research and insights projects have included event evaluations for Wild in Art and Haven's Hospices, data mapping for Wild in Art and reporting on Visit County Durham's 2025 visitor survey.


The Four Little Engines approach to insights is centred around finding the story in data, analytics and qualitative feedback, and sharing this story with our client and their stakeholders through clear reporting, engaging presentations and appropriate recommendations.
